What is a DMCA Agent?
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law that controls access to copyrighted work on the internet. The DMCA seeks to protect website owners from copyright infringement liability if they post content that infringes on a protected work.
Registering a DMCA Agent with the US Copyright Office allows website owners to protect themselves from copyright infringement lawsuits. A DMCA Agent receives copyright infringement notices and “take down” notices on behalf of the website owner. Once an infringement notice is received, the DMCA Agent is responsible for ensuring that the copyrighted material is taken down immediately from the website. A DMCA Agent is necessary in order to be able to receive DMCA “safe harbors” and protect yourself (and your business) from copyright infringement lawsuits.
